“TOUCH ME” PROJECT AT THE ANNA AKHMATOVA MUSEUM

October 10 — November 9, 2003
Spb ART-Project Foundation (USA)
Russian Album Foundation
Anna Akhmatova Museum at the Fountain House

The exhibition will feature projects by renowned artists from St. Petersburg and New York. The project participants include: Olga Tobreluts, Vitaly Pushnitsky, Philip Doncov, Nadezhda Zubareva, Olga and Alexander Florensky, Elena Gubanova and Ivan Govorkov, Elena Trapeznikova, as well as Al & Jeff Bliumis, Sun J Park, Bonnie Crawford, Anna Frants, Irina Danilova, and Mikhail Epstein.

The emergence of Touch art as a distinct art form was sporadic throughout the last century and occurred in independent and often disconnected centers. The surge of tactile art in St. Petersburg has a qualitatively different character. Contrary to the practice of the “fathers of Touch art” — Filippo Marinetti, Boccioni, Duchamp, or Ay-O, who built their artistic process as purely tactile, the artists of St. Petersburg create projects where the dominant visual perception is enhanced and transformed in various ways through tactile contact. The interactive projects by New York artists presented at this exhibition demonstrate a new direction in the development of Touch art.
